Journal Entry 17 (Day 17)

Hello! Good Evening guys, its day seventeen of my OIP trip in Nanjing – China. Today I woke up at 6.30am to prepare myself for today’s trip. Shan Chun and I showered, packed our stuff and went to Nicson room to check our Year 2 Semester 1 (Y2S1) overall examination results as it was release early this morning before we went down for breakfast as well as to check out of the hotel at 8am.

My results are stated below:
Analogue Circuit Design & Applications – B
Applications Programming – B
Business and the Economy – A
Electronic Design & Prototyping – A+
Engineering Mathematics 3A – B+
Fundamental of Financial Management – AD
Idea Blueprint – PM (Pass with Merit)
*DPP* – Hospitality Management – A

Current GPA for Y2S1: 3.5217
Cumulative GPA: 3.6800

Base on my current result it looks like I didn’t do too badly despite my careless mistake which tend to occur almost every time in all examination. But I still can’t escape the fact that my GPA has been dropping since Year 1 Semester 1, Cumulative GPA from 3.82 to 3.75 to 3.68. But I am still trying my best to maintain and improve my GPA though for the future.

Anyway Shan Chun and I went down for breakfast at 8am and soon Nicson and Jun Hao joined us. We chat and ate till about 9am where we gathered outside the hotel to board the hired comfort bus to our next location.

The journey from Suzhou to Zhou Zhuang took about two hour which we arrived at 11.10am. The first place we went was Zhou Zhuang Hotel to have our lunch there. We had about 10 course meal which was quite filling despite some food tasting a little salty and spicy which the food taste were similar to Nanjing and Wuxi.

After our filling meal, we head to Zhou Zhuang Guide which was China’s first ever water town. We took many photos and the first tourist attraction we went was “Guai Wu” a building filled with weird and inverted rooms. The tour guide who were with us told us to pay a fee of 20 Yuan to enter this attraction. Everyone was unhappy for a moment as everyone thought that it should have been included in our tour package and why are we paying for it now. Anyway after a while of hesitation everyone then decided to pay the fee to enter and hoping it would be worth our money.

The place was really fun and exciting as we took lots of photos. At some point of time it was a little scary. The painting on the walls gives a very realistic 3D effect as if you could walk through it. The props and all enable all the house furniture and structure to be inverted as if we are walking on the house ceiling and the floor is above our head. There was even a slated room which cause the centre of gravity to change as it makes us dizzy as we walked into the room. There was even one room which was frightening as you put on the headphone and we are able to hear some noise effect as we seat by the table in the room. It was really an awesome experience and it was worth our money.

After the “Guai Wu” attraction, we went to visit the “Zhang House” at 1.30pm which was built by Xu Kui, the younger brother of Xuda, the king of Zhongshan in the early 14 century ion the Ming Dynasty. It was originally known as Yi Shun Tang. It was sold to the Zhang’s in the 16th century. There are six courtyards, covering area of 1884 square meters with more than 70 different sizes of rooms. There is a 47 meters long passage way for servants and a small river passing through the house.

While I was visiting the attraction I realize that in China all the words and sign board are being read from the right hand side to the left hand side of the board instead of the convention reading from left to right. I took lots of photos and the building furniture was really ancient classic. Isn’t it cool?

After our visit, it was free and easy at 2pm onwards so we window shop around the area. Noel and I went to one of the Calligraphy shop as the sale lady said all we need to do is write down our Chinese name and the calligraphy master will convert it into a poem for 10 Yuan so I tried it out first. While waiting for the master to complete his piece of work we interacted with the sales lady and found out she was 19 years old which was same to me. Her academic level wasn’t good enough to enter university therefore she stayed here in this shop to learn calligraphy from the master. Anyway once the master finish writing the 10 Yuan worth of Poem on a piece of white paper and the sales lady ask if I wanted this poem to be on a scroll which would cost about 150 Yuan. Since I found it not bad so I purchase one of it. Noel later on had purchase a larger scroll stating down his entire family members name.

While walking around the water town, I had observed that most of the people in Zhou Zhuang seem to be rather poor in such a rural area. We even saw an old lady in particular who runs after people for their water bottle. We actually experience it ourselves as the old lady snatch our bottle from our hands even if the drink wasn’t finish and if we resist and choose not to give it to her, she will follow and pull your shirt till you stop and gave her the bottle.

At 3.15pm everyone gathered back at our meeting spot and took the hired comfort bus to Shanghai directly. It took about two hours to reach from Zhou Zhuang to Shanghai. One small incident which will always be remembered was when we were on the bus mid-way to Shanghai, one of the AE students, Leslie, was too urgent and actually went to the driver seat and borrows a bucket to nature do its thing. The lecturers whom are in front took out umbrella to cover up the scene. It was really a joke to most of them but guess it’s really a once in a lifetime memorable experience for him to remember in his poly days.

Anyway we reach Sheng Xian Hotel at 5.30pm and check in for the night. Shan Chun and I unpacked our stuff and went down to meet everyone at the concierge at 6pm as we all go for our dinner at “秦家村大酒店, Qin Jia Cun Hotel”. We had a range of dishes and the food in Shanghai taste a little salty but it was nice to eat. While having our meal, there were some dancer who came in and performance for us. Their performance was simple and was quite cultural I guess.

After our filling meal, we took the hired comfort bus back to the hotel to call it a day. The moment we reach our hotel and there was still quite some time for us to spare as it was still early in the night, Wen Jie and friends as well as Noel, Shan Chun, Jun Hao, Nicson and I went to walk around the surrounding of our hotel area. There wasn’t much shop around to do any window shopping so we just walked around and brought some light snacks to be consumed. We went back to the hotel around 9.30pm.

Its 10.30pm now and I’m still writing this post. Anyway today have been a fun and exciting day. One thing I would like to comment is that the hotel that we are in today seems to be a lower grade as compared to the previous two hotels we went in the past two days. Although we had a higher expectation after all we are in Shanghai, a more develop country as compared to Wuxi, Suzhou and Nanjing. Tomorrow is going to be another long day!
