Journal Entry 18 (Day 18)

Hello! Good Evening guys, its day eighteen of my OIP trip in Nanjing – China. Today I woke up at 6.30am to prepare myself for today’s tour around Shanghai. Shan Chun and I packed our stuff and went down for breakfast at 7am. We ate fried rice with egg and once out tummy was filled up we went back up to our hotel room to rest for a while as the gathering time to meet was 9am.

At 9am we met everyone else at the hotel’s concierge and we went up the hired comfort bus to our first location of the day. The first place we went was Shanghai’s Oriental Pear TV tower which was located at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong district, by the side of Huangpu River, opposite of The Bund.

It was designed by the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. Principal designers are Jiang Huan Chen, Lin Benlin and Zhang Xiulin. Construction began in 1990 and the tower was completed in 1994. At 468 m (1,535 feet) high, it was the tallest structure in China from 1994–2007, when it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center. The Oriental Pearl Tower belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.

On 7 July 2007, Oriental Pearl Tower was host to the Chinese Live Earth concert. The tower features 11 spheres, big and small. The two largest spheres, along the length of the tower, have diameters of 50 m (164 ft) for the lower and 45 m (148 ft) for the upper. They are linked by three columns, each 9 m (30 ft) in diameter. The highest sphere is 14 m (46 ft) in diameter.

The entire building is supported by three enormous columns that start underground. The tower has fifteen observatory levels. The highest (known as the Space Module) is at 350 m (1148 ft). The lower levels are at 263 m (863 ft) (Sightseeing Floor) and at 90 m (295 ft) (Space City). There is a revolving restaurant at the 267 m (876 ft) level. The project also contains exhibition facilities, restaurants and a shopping mall. There is also a 20-room hotel called the Space Hotel between the two large spheres. An antenna, broadcasting TV and radio programs, extends the construction by another 118 m (387 ft) to a total height of 468 metres (1,535 ft).

The design of the building is said to be based on a verse of the Tang Dynasty poem Pipa Song by Bai Juyi about the wonderful sprinkling sound of apipa instrument, like pearls, big and small falling on a jade plate. However, the designer Jiang Huancheng says that he did not have the poem in mind when designing the tower. It was the chief of the jury board who said it reminded him of that poem.

I took lots of photos as the scenery from above the ground was really beautiful. They even have a glass flooring which we were stepping on to see the ground level from above. It was a scary moment because if the glass flooring were to break, it only meant one way down to the underworld.

Anyway after our visit inside the tower, we took a short bus ride at 11.30am to view the tower from another angle outside the tower. We took lots of photo of the tower with the landscape of the seas and business district. Our tour guide, Xiao Li asked us if we know why some of the towers look like some Chinese traditional tower. He said it was because China people tend to believe in “Feng Shui”.

We went for lunch at 12.30pm at Huangpu No 1 Private restaurant. The food there was awesome! We had a range of dishes and everyone enjoyed it. The food here tastes quite similar to Singapore restaurant. It was neither too salty nor spicy.

After our lunch we took the hired comfort bus to Nanjing Street (Still in Shanghai – Just a street name) to do some window shopping. When we Nanjing Street at 1.40pm, we took the mini tour train ride on the street to the other end of the shopping district. We took some photos and we realise that the area was filled with quite expensive stuff. The price was ranging to hundreds of dollar even for a shirt. Hence, we did not buy anything much from that area. Everyone gathered back at 2pm at SOFITEL (one of the building there).

Ten minutes before I went to gather with the group, I saw an ally and it seems to be selling some stuff. I thought there might be some cheap stuff over there, so I went to take a look. When I was there, there was one man who brought be around to see their goods ranging from bags to shoes to shirts which were all branded stuff. It seems to me that these shops are illegal because before they enter the room, the guy seems to be knocking a code on the door before entering. Once I entered the first shop, it was filled with branded stuff which I believe most of them would be counterfeit items. I picked up a counterfeit Prada shoe and asked for the price, the shop owner said it cost 1400 Yuan. The price sounds ridicules to me and I left the shop. I also realise the guy keep following me wherever I’m going. I told him nicely that I was rushing and not really interested in their goods and I walked towards the nearest main road I could found.

I manage to make it out there and gathered back with the rest of the group on time. We took the hired comfort bus at 2pm and left for another shopping district know as Yu Fashion Garden. The place look like there are temples everywhere as every building are uniquely design using temple looking like tiles. That was the true shopping district we were looking for as the items there are cheap and affordable. I took lots of photo and enjoyed my shopping trip as I manage to purchase a Bits earpiece as my current earpiece seems to be malfunctioning.

At 6.15pm everyone gathered together at the meeting spot and we went for dinner somewhere nearby in a Chinese restaurant. We had a range of dishes and we enjoyed our meal.

After our filling meal, we took the hired comfort bus to the sea bay at 7.30pm to take their ship tour to see the night scenery of Shanghai. The night scenery was really beautiful with all the lightings of the other ships and commercial buildings especially Shanghai’s Oriental Pear TV tower. We took lots of photos while aboard the ship. The ship tour last about one hour journey.

After our awesome ride with the breeze of the seas, it started to rain and we rush back to the hired comfort bus which brought us back to the hotel to call it a night. It’s 10.10pm now and guess today’s trip was the best of all days as we get to enjoy the natural night scenery of Shanghai. Tomorrow will be out last day in Shanghai where we are going to check out of the hotel by 11am and head back to Nanjing straight from Shanghai after lunch. It’s pretty late and I’m rather exhausted.
