Journal Entry 22 (Day 22)

Hello! Good Evening guys, its day twenty-two of my OIP trip in Nanjing – China. Today I woke up at 6.30am to prepare myself for the farm trip at the outskirt of Nanjing. We left our apartment at 7.50am to meet everyone else at the roundabout to take a hired comfort bus to the farm. The bus journey took about 2 hours to reach the destination and I believe partly the reason for our delay was because no one onboard went to the specify farm we are going before.

The bus stop a number of times to ask for direction and the lady onboard who join us keep calling the farm side management for direction to their farm. I felt that it was a little unprofessional as we would feel a little insecure and unsafe being aboard a bus with no direction. You will never know if the bus driver backfire and kidnap us at any point of time, of course that would be the worst case scenario I would think of. At one point of time when the bus had stopped to ask for direction, some local policemen ask questions like where are we from and where are we heading. It was that moment when everyone felt very insecure which caught our attention. Like I mention before, a bus without any direction brings lots of suspicion to road user. Therefore, it wasn’t too surprising when the policemen came aboard for a moment.

I believe that on any tour we are going or visiting I believe the organiser should already pre-plan the event so that things would run smoothly on the actual day itself. At least they should know the direction on how to get there for a start and the rest will roll along.

Anyway we reach the farm at 10am and the place we were at was filled with greenery of hundreds and hundreds of hectare of crops such as corn plants, cotton plants, sweet potatoes plants, peanuts plants, hairy pea plants, rice fields and many others.

The first place we went was the corn field which the person in-charge there told us some information of their farm. It was said that their corn fields and other plant fields uses chicken and goat shit as fertilizer as there are much nutrients in the shit as these animals ate only plants. Hence, it’s good for the grown of any plants. Evidence could be found on the path which we had been walking all day as the animal shit could be found everywhere on the ground which look like a round black pebble.

The second place we went was to the sweet potatoes fields to have some hands on work which most of us dug out some sweet potatoes from the ground. While walking towards the sweet potatoes fields, some of us found some hairy peas plants which were rather familiar to us as it’s usually a delicacy in Japanese restaurant to serve them in soya sauce. Everyone spend quite some time digging for sweet potatoes as I could see the determination in their eye to bring out the crops from the ground. Everyone was so happy and excited to have their crops in their hand which was a moment of success after their great effort digging it out.

The third place we went was to the hairy pea plant field to take a look at their crops, some of us were harvesting it and some of us were taking photos. The forth place we went was the cotton plant field which was amazing to see plants that actually grow cotton. The fifth place we went was to the peanut plant field to have some hands on work again to dig out fresh peanuts to be consumed. The sixth place we went was to see the already harvest sesame seeds plant. Last but not the least we went to a factory to help strip the corn from its outer plant leaves before heading back to a nearby building to have our lunch.
Our lunch meal today was filled with vegetables and more vegetables. There were only 2 dishes of meat and almost everything else was vegetables even the soup. The organic food we ate taste and smell weird. Most of us didn’t finish the food and there were lots of leftover. Oh well… it’s worth the experience even with a half filled stomach.

After our meal, we went back to the factory to help the farmers strip another round of corns from its outer plant leaves. This time round we strip a few basket worth of corns. While striping its leaves from the corns, most of us found some caterpillars on the corn chewing.

After that we were invited to enter their factory to see them wash and pack the corns for sales. Before we could enter the factory, we were asked to put on a white suit, a shower cap, a mask, and plastic wrap round of shoes as part of the factory hygiene purposes. While we were inside, I saw the process from washing the corns to packing of the corns to storing them into a big cold store room. It was a long process of cleaning the corns with hot water and killing all the bacteria and bugs inside the corn to cleaning the corns with cold water before packing and sorting out the defects to be rejected. After that we came out of the factory and let the other group go in to watch the same process.

We went to the nearby goat farm next which we saw many goats in their stable. There were lots of big and small goats which were quite adorable at times. We spend quite some time in the goat farm taming the goats as well as taking photos.

After a fulfilling day at the farm we took the hired comfort bus at back to our school. On the way back I realise that the bus driver seems a little reckless as he keep horning to make the other road user to give way to him without sharing a thought for the safety of the other road user. I believe he should learn to be more patient and spare a thought of our safety even as passer aboard his bus. Anyway we reach our school at 3.20pm and everyone head back to their apartment to rest and to call it a day. I then started catching up with my social media and started doing today journal post. I went down for dinner at 8pm to order a chicken burger and chicken popcorn.

I would say today was really a life time experience to try out what the farmers around the world have been working so hard to bring us such awesome crops to fill our hunger. Guess everyone in modern times have their meals with dishes which I bet they don’t even know the origin of the food with the hard work and sweat from all the famers. The famers here really took care of these crops very well as I believe this is not an easy job to do so. Without an experience and well trained farmer, crops grown might not be as high quality as those with experience. I would say their crops are their reflection of their hard work. Its 10.10pm, guess it’s pretty late and tomorrow I’ll be having IS lesson at 9am and going for an industrial visit at 1.15pm. Oh by the way I got an ‘A’ for my Diploma plus Programme (DPP) in Leisure & Retail Management – Hospitality. Yay! I also got to know my Year 2 Semester 1 overall examination results. I got 3 A’s, 3 B’s and 1 PM. Overall GPA got 3.68. Comparing with the previous semester I drop a little again. Oh well at least I manage to pass all the modules. Good Night and Take Care Readers!
